A recent hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee highlighted not only the alarming spike in fentanyl deaths all across the U.S. but the fact that the drugs responsible for those deaths are pouring across our wide open southern border with Mexico along with the MS-13 and cartel traffickers that bring them to communities across our country.
At least 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2021 and most of those were due to fentanyl and other illicit synthetic opioids. Because fentanyl can be cooked up in a lab and does not rely on any natural crops (like cocaine or opium does), it is cheap and easy to make in vast quantities. Traffickers’ practice of mixing fentanyl in with other drugs makes even more enormous profits for them–and adds to the overdose death count for users who don’t know there’s a deadly dose of fentanyl in whatever other drug they think they’re taking. Sometimes it’s Adderall, sometimes it’s Xanax, but more often than not, it’s a young American between the ages of 18-45 who is taking it. Drug overdose, specifically from fentanyl, is today the leading cause of death for that age cohort in America.
There is also a new synthetic opioid even more deadly and powerful than fentanyl that’s been hitting the streets in America in the months since late 2021. It’s actually an entire family of opioids called “nitazenes”. Some of the street names for these new drugs are “Proto” (for protonitazene) and “Iso” (for isonitazene). As with fentanyl, traffickers are using these to make counterfeit versions of popular drugs like Valium and Oxycontin, with the nitazene additives usually unbeknownst to those taking them. Also like fentanyl, these nitazene precursor chemicals are being sent to the Mexican drug cartels and gangs like MS-13 from China, which then mix them up and add them into the pills they produce.
Communist China is the source of almost all of the precursor chemicals needed to make both fentanyl and the nitazene opioids. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is directly complicit in permitting the export of those chemicals to the Mexican drug cartels, deliberately assaulting the U.S. with a deadly form of Chemical Warfare (see “Unrestricted Warfare”).
Getting serious about closing the U.S. southern border with Mexico would go a long way towards cutting this flow of traffickers and killer drugs into America.
